Just joined the list so I don't have a thread to reply in, but I saw
some discussion of DRM as a source of modem inspiration. Some years ago
there was an adaptation of DRM to ham radio SSB radios. It was dubbed
"Mode H" and its description is at:

You can see working examples of this DRM mode in the SSTV programs for
Linux:

Qsstv
TRXAMADRM

Works quite well on both HF and VHF.

The latest versions of QSSTV, in the Debian testing repo IIRC, have DRM.
